Strathearn Highland Single Malt Whisky Inaugural Release (700ml)
Strathearn Highland Single Malt Whisky Inaugural Release (700ml)
Strathearn Whisky Highland Single Malt
Strathearn Whisky is produced only in small batches from one of Scotland's smallest distilleries. The boutique distillery is located 9 miles west of the city of Perth (Scotland). Strathearn distillery began operations in 2013, but was subsequently acquired by Douglas Laing and Co in 2019, who shifted the focus away from experimental wood maturation, but retained the previous owner's appreciation for using older, less commercial barley varieties, such as Maris Otter.
This first release since Douglas Laings acquisition has been dubbed 'the Inaugural' Strathearn release was made from 100% Maris Otter barley, matured in 32 oak casks (a mix of ex-bourbon, ex-sherry and virgin oak) for between 6 and 8 years, bottled at 50% ABV.
TASTING NOTES
Anticipate a rich malted barley depth with gentle oak on the nose. The mouth-coating, syrupy palate brings honey and buttercream with bakingspice and dried apricots. The warming finish is long with home baking and buttery oat biscuits.
Australia's allocation for the first release of Strathearn Whisky is only 240 bottles, and with the production of Strathearn down at around 70,000 litres/p.a we can only expect around this many bottlers per year. We really don't expect these to hang around for long.
